Full Mouth Reconstruction in Park City, Salt Lake City, & Heber, UT
What is a Full Mouth Reconstruction?
As the name implies, full-mouth reconstruction involves most or all of the teeth and soft tissues of the patient’s mouth. The goal is to replace missing teeth, repair damaged teeth, correct improperly aligned jaw joints and bites, reverse gum disease, rebuild lost jawbone mass, and replace worn out dental appliances. Dr. Peterson’s extensive experience with all facets of restorative dentistry enables him to perform most of what may be needed. But, if there are areas where outside expertise is necessary, he may enlist the work of an endodontist or oral surgeon, for example.

What are the Benefits of Full Mouth Reconstruction?
The benefits of having a healthy, functioning, beautiful smile once again are both functional and aesthetic. Patients can again eat a full diet, no longer constrained by missing or painful teeth, and disease and infection are treated. That’s a good thing for overall nutrition and health. Plus, it’s nice to eat what you want and not worry about the consequences for your teeth or gums.
And what’s a beautiful smile worth to a person’s self-confidence? When a patient has numerous missing and broken teeth, gum disease, and the other problems leading to reconstruction, it’s inevitable that he or she will hide their smile. This makes you self-conscious and prone to avoiding talking in a group. This hinders you in the workplace and with friends. Getting a beautiful smile once again can really change a person’s entire self-image.
How long does full mouth reconstruction take?
Full-mouth reconstruction with Dr. Peterson is an involved commitment. Just as the damage didn’t immediately happen, the repairs will take time. Obviously, your timeframe depends on just what your treatment plan entails. Dr. Peterson will discuss exactly what’s involved during your consultation, but after careful planning many patients have only two main appointments. One to removed old dental restorations and cavity, and the next to deliver your beautiful new smile. There will always be shorter follow-up visits to make sure you are comfortable and healthy. For some patients a full mouth reconstruction can take many months to complete.
Does full mouth reconstruction hurt?
At Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry, we utilize the latest techniques to benefit our patients. Modern anesthesia ensures you won’t feel anything during the procedures. There will be some pain during recovery, but we help with pain medication to manage that. Plus, modern techniques (like high tech lasers) involve much less trauma and subsequent pain. If you’re apprehensive about any of the procedures, we can use sedation or sleep dentistry to ease your fears and anxiety, or even allow you to sleep through everything!
Am I a candidate for full mouth reconstruction?
This isn’t a “set” procedure or list, so there really isn’t a single threshold that would denote you need full-mouth reconstruction. Dr. Peterson usually uses the term for patients whose situation has progressed far past just a tooth or two needing attention, or when the gums have passed gingivitis into full-on gum disease.
These are some possible issues that lead to full-mouth reconstruction:
- Multiple teeth that have been lost due to extensive decay or trauma
- Multiple teeth that have been injured or fractured
- Teeth that have been worn down from long-term grinding or acid reflux
- Gum disease is threatening the health of the teeth and the jaw
- TMD that has been resolved with a physiologic orthotic
Every patient’s situation is unique, and Dr. Peterson will discuss your individual treatment plan with you, detailing exactly what he feels is needed to bring your teeth, gums, and overall bite back to full health.
