Microneedling Park City, UT
Human skin has amazing healing properties. When injured, the body initiates various repair mechanisms that heal and improve the skin. That’s the idea behind microneedling — creating hundreds of microscopic punctures in the skin across the treatment area, to which the body initiates a wound healing response. This breaks down certain skin problems and improves skin texture and firmness.
We now offer microneedling at Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry in Park City, UT.
What is microneedling?
At Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry, we use the Dermapen for our microneedling. It features 12 tiny needles that can be set to different penetration depths, (up to 2.5mm,) depending on the patient’s skin problems. The needles continually move up and down as the Dermapen is moved across the treatment area.
As this happens, the needles create hundreds of microscopic punctures through the epidermis, the skin’s outer layer, entering the dermis layer. The punctures are so small they begin to heal almost immediately, but your body senses the penetrations in the dermis layer of the skin. It believes there has been a wound, and a wound-healing response is triggered.
The body produces new collagen and elastin to send to the “wound” to heal it. Collagen is a protein responsible for the skin’s structural support, while elastin makes the skin firm, yet pliable.
Beyond triggering the wound response, the microscopic channels also make the skin more available to healing serums that can penetrate the skin far more effectively. This further improves the skin’s health and appearance.
Microneedling works by increasing collagen. Why is this important to the skin?
Collagen is responsible for providing the underlying structural framework for our skin. It makes our skin firm and resistant to wrinkling. But our bodies decrease the production of collagen and elastin as we age — reducing production by one additional percentage point every year after we turn 20. At 50, we’re now producing 30 percent less collagen than in our youth. No wonder our skin sags, thins, and allows wrinkles and creases to form.
By triggering a wound response, microneedling gives our collagen production a boost, improving the skin.
What skin issues does microneedling improve?
At Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry, we use microneedling on all skin tones and it doesn’t have a risk of causing hyperpigmentation. It can be used anywhere on the body, but the face, neck, and décolletage are the typical targets.
Here are skin conditions we treat with microneedling:
- Acne scars
- Large pores
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Uneven texture
- Stretch marks
- Scars from surgery
- Chicken pox scars
- Sagging skin
- Pigmentation from acne or sun damage
Is Microneedling Painful?
The idea of creating hundreds of minor injuries, basically, doesn’t sound exactly pleasant. We get that. But the reality is microneedling is not painful at all.
Prior to beginning with the Dermapen, we apply topical numbing cream, and this keeps your skin comfortable during the treatment. The forehead area is the most sensitive because the skin there isn’t as thick, but we compensate for that by decreasing the penetration depth of the needles. The lips can be another sensitive area.
If you wonder what microneedling feels like, our patients equate the feeling to moving a light grade of sandpaper across the skin, and most are pleasantly surprised by how easily they tolerate treatment.
What is the microneedling procedure like?
Before your microneedling session begins, Dr. Gilselle Batcheller-Sloop applies topical numbing cream to your treatment areas and this is allowed to take effect. She then attaches a new, sterile, 12-needle cartridge to the Dermapen, and she selects the appropriate penetration depth setting based on your treatment needs, your skin thickness, and other variables.
Next, in a single motion, the pen is gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding across in one direction. This is repeated until the entire treatment area has been covered. As soon as she has completed the Dermapen passes, we apply a healing serum to your skin to calm it and start the healing process. This is especially effective, as the microscopic punctures allow the serum to reach the dermis layer.

Would I be a good candidate for microneedling?
Microneedling can improve anyone’s skin. The relative simplicity of this procedure also means there aren’t really any limitations with who can have it. Unlike some laser skin rejuvenation procedures, microneedling doesn’t have a risk of creating hyperpigmentation. It can be used on any skin type and any skin tone. The tiny punctures are so small that they begin to heal immediately, so there isn’t risk of infection. This is a great skin improvement treatment for anyone.
Is there recovery after microneedling?
Immediately following your treatment your skin will appear red and flushed. It will look as if you have a mild sunburn. The degree of redness will depend on the depth of the needle penetration and on how many passes were made across the treatment areas. There may be some bleeding points visable. Your skin will also feel a little tight and you may have some slight swelling. All of this will pass within a day.
So, while a microneedling session won’t preclude you from going about your normal activities, it’s a good idea to schedule your session keeping in mind you’ll have the time for your skin to settle down and get busy healing itself without makeup or lotions for the remainder of the day of treatment.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
There is an immediate “glow” after your treatment session, but this is an initial reaction of the skin to the punctures. Microneedling is really a progression of results. This is because your collagen and elastin production ramps up and continues. Visible changes with the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Your results can continue to improve for up to six months.
Your results are permanent. The new collagen and elastin are real and they aren’t going anywhere. But your body continues to decrease their natural production with the passing years. That’s just a fact of the aging process. For that reason, continuing microneedling treatments is a way to hedge new production against the normal decline.
How many treatments will I need?
Any number of microneedling procedures – even one – will provide bebefits to your skin. Ideal initial therapy entails PRF supplementataion and 3-6 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, or acne scars, 6-8 sessions will likely be recommended spaced at six-week intervals. Most clients opt to have microneedling treatment maintenance visits because the appreciate the results so much. The continued boost in collagen production and the look of their skin is what brings microneedling clients back.
Where can I have microneedling done?
We love microneedling because it simply triggers a natural healing/skin improvement response in the body. For that reason, it can be used anywhere on the body. The most common target areas are the face, neck, and décolletage.
