How to Massage Your TMD Pain Away
- Posted on: Jul 15 2019
With a reported 10 million Americans with a temporomandibular joint disorder, if you are a part of this number, you at least know you are not alone. As a condition that can cause a lot of pain, discomfort, and overall irritation, Dr. Peterson sees a lot of patient for this condition. Depending on how severe your TMD is, Dr. Peterson may recommend that patients start with small treatments like massage, but how can massage help alleviate your symptoms and how can you massage your temporomandibular joint? Let’s take a closer look and see.
What Can Massage Do?
If your TMD is caused by a lot of stress and tension in your jaw, then massage can be a real lifesaver. Because a lot of patients get TMD during situations in which they are stressed or experiencing a lot of anxiety, massage can help to relax the jaw muscles. Think of it this way, if you have a sore back, you may go in to see a massage therapist to loosen stiff back muscles. Similarly, when you massage the muscles and joints in your jaw, you can also find relief and hopefully some comfort too.
How Can I Massage My Jaw?
There are different types of massage that you can do on your jaw, including taking your index and middle finger, locating your TMJ, and rubbing the area in a circular motion. Typically, patients prefer this type of massage because it’s easy to do, it’s effective, and you can control how much pressure you apply.
In addition to doing this type of massage, we also encourage patients to move their jaw from side to side throughout the day to break up any tension and soften the facial muscles.
Massage is by no means a cure for TMD, but it can help you find relief from your constant TMD pain. Are you ready to learn more about treatments for this condition? If so, contact our Park City office today and call us at (435) 658-0678.
