The importance of routine dental visits
- Posted on: Mar 15 2020
The American Dental Association recommends that adult men and women visit their dentist every six months for a thorough cleaning and evaluation. However, not all patients schedule routine appointments with their dentist. Whether its misinformation or a fear of the dentist, Dr. Paul Peterson of Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry encourages patients to schedule a consultation appointment at his practice to learn more about how to care for the smile—and the importance of routine dental visits.
What happens during a six-month recall appointment?
Once patients have established themselves with a dentist they know and trust, they need to book appointments every six months. During these appointments, the dental hygienist will provide a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums. If any problems are spotted during this time, he or she will notify the dentist of their concerns. During some appointments, dental x-rays are performed to check the health of the teeth where the naked eye cannot see. X-rays allow the dentist to evaluate the bone of the jaw, and to check the teeth for signs of decay, disease, or infection. A thorough evaluation is completed to assess the health of the patient’s smile. If any problems are discovered during this appointment, a diagnosis is made, and the dentist will make recommendations regarding possible treatment options.
Why are routine dental visits important?
While most of one’s oral health care happens at home, including brushing and flossing, problems can develop without a patient’s knowledge. Some conditions do not show signs or symptoms until the later stages when more damage has occurred. Conditions, including tooth decay and periodontal disease, are more affordable to treat when they are caught early during a routine evaluation, and less damage will happen if these conditions are addressed sooner rather than later.
