Porcelain Veneers Questions
Serving Salt Lake City, Park City and surrounding Utah communities.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin porcelain laminates that are placed on the front surface of the tooth. Dr. Johnson will typically remove a small portion of the enamel of the tooth before the porcelain veneers are fitted and bonded to the surface of the tooth. The bonding of the veneers strengthens the tooth and gives it an aesthetically pleasing look at the same time.
Will porcelain veneers fix my chipped teeth?
Porcelain veneers are used to fix a variety of dental problems including broken or chipped teeth, crooked or misaligned teeth, discolored or stained teeth, gaps between teeth, and worn teeth.
How are they made and fitted?
Dr. Johnson will work with you and a lab technician in order to create porcelain veneers that are the perfect size, shape, color and translucency for you and the smile that you desire. In order for the porcelain veneers to look good and fit correctly in your mouth, a small amount of enamel must be removed, and your gums may need to be reshaped so that there is a perfect match between the shape of your gums and the shape of your new porcelain veneers. Dr. Johnson will then make impressions of your teeth and create molds so the dental lab can create custom porcelain veneers that will fit you perfectly.
What are the advantages to porcelain veneers?
Veneers are an excellent cosmetic dentistry option that provide better results than the minor reparations tooth bonding provides. Porcelain veneers do not require the amount of time or commitment that is associated with braces, and they are stain-resistant. Porcelain veneers give the appearance of natural teeth, and gum tissues react well to them.
How long do they last?
Porcelain veneers are laser bonded to your teeth so that there is little chance of them falling off. They tend to last between five and ten years. Although they are stain-resistant, the cement used to bond them to the teeth can become stained. The porcelain veneers should be replaced so that they continue to match the color of your natural teeth. There are several ways to prolong the life of your porcelain veneers including avoiding clenching and grinding your teeth as these practices wear them down and can crack or chip the porcelain. Dark foods and drinks such as red wine and coffee should be minimized while you have porcelain veneers.
Are porcelain veneers expensive?
Because porcelain veneers offer a custom cosmetic dentistry solution and require two visits and the assistance of a dental lab, they are not inexpensive. However, Dr. Johnson offers affordable financing options and will work with you to ensure you can afford your dental work.
