Your temporaries will not feel like your final restorations, which will be smoother and have more vitality. There is a period of sensitivity towards temperature and chewing until several weeks after your permanent restorations are placed. Please do not eat anything hard or real chewy.

Some patients experience a sensation of contraction with cold/hot food or beverages. This is normal, you will not experience this with your permanent restorations. You will have some discomfort due to the trauma of your preparation appointment. Each patient will vary with the sensitivity they experience depending on the extent of his/her decay, fractures and older restorations removed.

  • Take 600mg of Ibuprofen every 6 hours as needed—not to exceed 3200 mg in a 24-hour period. ( Or a prescription if recommended by the doctor) If your sensitivity cannot be managed with ibuprofen, please call.
  • Brush and rinse with Listerine, Closys or warm salt water. (If the laser was used during your appointment, you will want to wait one day before you brush that area. In addition, warm your toothbrush with hot water to soften bristles when you do brush.) You will also be giving rotopoints and a rubbertip stimulator to massage gums twice a day for best results.
  • If your bite feels "high" after the anesthetic wears off, please call for an adjustment. With time, a high temporary will bruise the ligament around the tooth and may cause it to become extremely sensitive.
